Access World is a global commodities warehousing and logistics business. We specialize in handling, storage, transportation and processing of commodities including non-ferrous and ferrous metals, ferroalloys, project cargo, oil & gas and other agricultural products. In addition, we are an approved warehouse keeper of the London Metal Exchange, and we provide LME warehousing and associated services to traders, producers, financiers and consumers of base metals. Our global head office is located in Zug, Switzerland, with each region operating in semi-autonomous offices with their own corporate functions including commercial, finance HR, legal and operations. The Regional Head Office for the Sub- Saharan Africa business is in South Africa for Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo and Namibia etc.

Purposes of the position:

  • A highly motivated individual with the relevant skill sets, capable of establishing and developing vendor relationships in Sub-Saharan Africa, including transporters/brokers and port operators etc.
  • Procurements of transport and ocean freight rates locally and internationally for both import and export cargo.
  • Hunting for new export/import freight and project business focusing on China and Africa trade flows.
  • Develop new markets outside of the current project and export business within Access World South Africa.
  • Maintain and develop exiting and new customer relations with specific focus on Access World’s Chinese customer base.

Duties will include but not limiting to:

  • Manage relationship with Chinese Freight & Project clients locally and internationally.
  • Address internal and external operational issues, liaising and coordinating with vendors (ports operators, transporters etc.) and internal clients.
  • Actively participate as a member of AW South Africa team and working closely with other Commercial and business unit Managers with Sub Saharan Africa and other Access World entities globally.
  • Establish and develop vendor relationships in South Africa such as with abnormal transporters, breakbulk vessel brokers/carriers, Container shipping lines and freight forwarders in Access World office locations.
  • Hunting for new export and import cargo focusing on metals and minerals as well as project cargo making use of other Access World offices globally where possible.
  • Communicate and work with all overseas Access World branches on Freight & Project leads to and from China.
  • Develop new markets outside of the current project, mining, metals and mineral markets such as renewable energy.
  • Monthly commercial activity reporting in form of current sales pipeline.

    • South Africa Team (e.g. Customer Service, Finance, HR, Commercial, Operations).
    • Africa Freight & Projects team, Commercial team.
    • Africa Projects Commercial Team.
    • Overseas Access World branches.
    • Monthly commercial activity reporting in form of current sales pipeline.
  • External
    • Strategic service providers and vendors (e.g. transporters, brokers, ports operators, etc.).
    • Carrier agents and freight forwarders.
    • Export and Project clients locally and internationally with focus on Chinese customer base.

Specific requirements for the position

  • Essential:
    • Minimum a college degree from an internationally recognized University.
    • Minimum 5-years sales experience in Sino-Africa Freight Forwarding or NVOCC environment, with a minimum of 2 years in management capacity.
    • Excellent commercial and entrepreneurial flair is critical to the success of this role.
    • Strong builder of relationships with interest parties.
    • Good knowledge of the shipping and logistics management industries.
    • Good leadership and influencing skills with a collaborative work style, fostering cooperation and teamwork.
    • Proven ability to work on cross-functional and multicultural teams.
    • Strong character, initiative, creative, innovative and analytical skills.
    • Meticulous, responsible and positive working attitude.
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Adaptable and able to accommodate prevailing conditions.
    • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
    • Ability to work effectively in a high pressure and fast paced working environment.
    • Ability to travel regularly locally and internationally.
    • Ability to travel on short notice.
    • Availability after office hours.
  • Communication Skills/Languages:
    • Good in both written and spoken English and Chinese is a must.
    • Superior interpersonal and communications skills.
    • Effective negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
  • Preferred:
    • Experience in 3PL logistics sector/project cargo/mining industry is preferred.
